Animal Taming Faqs from the Taming Discord Channel (2024)

I tried to throw this together quickly this morning because there are a lot of repeat questions that come to the animal taming channel that I think the regular responders wish we did not have answer every day. I will occasionally come back here to update, if you want to add anything, reply to the post.

Can someone transfer a pet to a character whose animal taming or animal lore skill is below the level needed to control the pet?

No for almost all pets. Only certain mounts, such as Ostards, Horses and Llamas can be transferred to someone with lower skill level than needed to control them.

What is a good taming build?
Biffski shared these, they are a good base for pvm builds. Mine is a modified version of the dex tamer because I like to have tracking to avoid PKs.

Silversprout shared some other builds. I like that he generally runs a more pvp ready dexer build and uses water aspect which is less expensive than fortune or command.

My build is a little different than the ones listed above. I am mainly including to show that you can modify your build to meet what you like. I run tracking, many people say tracking is not a good skill on a tamer because it does not significantly increase DPS, but I Like knowing when reds are near and I still can farm 60-70k an hour with my build:
120 taming
120 Animal Lore
100 herding
100 Fencing
100 Tracking
100 Vet
80 Arms Lore

A beginner friendly bard build from the most well known bard tamer on the server:
100 music/provo/disco/forensic/herding, 80 taming/80 lore, 60 veterinary. 2 dps spec pack mule ant lions with a hybrid stat spread devilbat tanking
cheap newbie bard tamer setup that you can get into quick and only risk 500g loadout to pks
herding-> tracking for pk visibility and stronger barding (135 eff skill with an eminent instrument)

My current group pvp build that farms also:
120 Taming
120 Animal Lore
100 Wrestling
100 Magery
100 Med
100 Tracking
80 Eval

What pet team(s) should I use at x level of taming?
Note that these are suggestions based on what has commonly been recommended in the taming channel, this is not an end all be all and over time if pets change, the recommendations might also.
More important than anything below, you should try out pets yourself and use the pets you like.
Also most pets perform significantly better at level 10. You can easily get to 90 taming, which has one of the most recommended pet teams, without a pet ever reaching level 10, so sub 90 pets have not been tested as much as the higher levels. If you want to try things out and share you are welcome to, but you will not find a lot of support in the taming discord channel on taming builds sub 90, except for maybe the stealth spider pk build at 75.

<70 - Rock Guar is a great tank, cave bears are ok. Someone also shared a post of a team of Jaguars killing a Living Fire in Inferno, but honestly most people in the taming channel do not spend a lot of time using pets sub 70 because it is so easy to get to 70 in the taming dungeon.

70 - Get a Scarab to tank. DPS is up to you. I used a Scarab to tank, searing mantis and asp for DPS until I hit 90.

75 - Some people build stealth pk tamers with 75 taming and lore to use trapdoor spiders. The spiders are super squishy, but the surprise of them popping out and damage from them may help in certain circ*mstances. I have mostly seen these succeed in group situations.

90 - 5 husk crabs. This is probably the best DPS per points spent in taming in lore you can get. Either build all 5 for DPS so max dex and damage or build 4 for dps and 1 tanky. If all you care about is best DPS and farm speed, there are very few teams above this level that significantly outperform the DPS of husk crabs. What you do find above this level are some tankier pets that do decent damage.

This video shows that even high level content like Ossuary level 4 can be farmed by a husk crab dexer.

I had the following listed before Silversprouts awesome testing:
Devourer beetle and Wisp, often recommended for mage tamers because mana drain or mana vampire can reduce resistance for wisp DPS to go up and carrion beetle is a good tank. If you don’t like healing multiple pets, the wisp stays at range which can prevent the need to heal it if you position well.

I really liked this one when starting. This is what my macro is based off of. Note it uses bandages to heal but changing it to use greater heal should be easy. Also it is not fully AFK, there are ways to modify it to be fully AFK see my amcro above.

What is considered a good base stat melee DPS pet to keep?
Personally I aim for positive numbers in the stats that matter. However for the min maxers out there,
Per [1CE] Hexoplex (Venandi) on discord, put the base % modifiers into the following following formula and aim for a minimum of 26, 32 is the max.
(Dmg*2)+(wrestle)+(Dex/4)

Does tracking/camping/forensics etc increase pet damage? NO

How important is arms lore on a dexer tamer for pvm dps? This is based on some testing by myself and some communications with Silversprout. Generally dropping arms lore will hurt your dps significantly unless you have leveled water aspect armor. Best example I can give. I dropped tactics for arms lore. This was before I had aspects so with full leveled aspect it might be different but in my case, not just my pet dps, my melee dps also increased from dropping tactics for arms lore. As mentioned above Silversprout has used some more pvp capable dexer builds that don't use arms lore with a full water suit and they have worked well. Lately he has been trying other aspects and they are not performing well without arms lore.

Do different shepherds crooks effect herding pet damage increase at all (i.e. magical or exceptionally crafted?) NO

Does poison aspect effect poison from pets? NO
